NJC Homecoming 2011

September 23-26

As always, our Homecoming coincided with the Fête des Vendanges, the annual festival of the grape harvest, which attracts thousands of visitors from all over the world. This year’s celebration was extraordinary because it marked the end of a year long celebration of the 1000th anniversary of the founding of Neuchâtel. on Saturday afternoon and a breath-taking firework display that evening.

NJC Alumni from the 1960’s to 2005 came back to the College to get reacquainted with each other, to visit their pension families and relive special memories of the magical year they spent at NJC.

Class of 1986 reunites in Deerhurst

The class of 1985-86 gathered for our 25 year reunion last month at the Deerhurst resort in Huntsville. There were 27 classmates in attendance, along with five brave spouses and one even braver teacher. It was a lovely Fall weekend complete with golf, trail running, spa treatments, bonfire, gourmet meals, special NJC door prizes, and a nostalgic dance to 80’s music.

Class of 2007 reunites in Toronto

July 23, 2011

Mitch Cleary (NJC ’07) writes, “For the past few summers since the grad class of 2007 flew back home to Canada after the experience that was Neuchâtel, we have been reuniting once a summer to spend a night with the friends we don’t see often enough, and relive the times that came with the place…”

This year, the event was held in downtown Toronto. There was a great turnout and the evening raised over $800 for NJC Travel Bursaries.

Special thanks to Mitch Cleary for his outstanding organization of this event, and to his team of helpers, Tom Lowden (NJC ’03), Ben McCabe (NJC ’07), Kevin Tawaststjerna (NJC ’09), **Phil Horner (NJC ’09) **, DJ Richardson and everyone who attended!

NJC HOMECOMING 2010

SEPTEMBER 24-26

Way back in 1970, we had cool, rainy weather during our Féte des Vendanges weekend so we were not surprised to find similar weather on Friday, September 24, 2010. However that was not enough to dampen the spirits of 14 NJC classmates and ten spouses who gathered to celebrate our 40th reunion. This was our third reunion during the Féte (25th, 35th being the others) and over 40 alumni from our year have attended at least one of them, and ten have attended all three reunions.

SEPTEMBER 24-26

It’s early December and I’m looking out my window at the first snowfall of the season, still feeling warm and fuzzy after our experience at the September Homecoming in Neuchâtel. The city is just as beautiful as it was in 60/61 despite a more global feel, the food and wine still delicious.

On Friday evening we attended a warm welcoming reception at the school, our old Foyer, and viewed proposed expansion plans. From the terrace, we were treated to a magnificent view of the mountains appearing across the lake. FYI, our old school premises at the École de Commerce now, among other things, houses the Balkan School of English. On Saturday afternoon, we were bussed up the mountain to Lignières for the Désalpes, a new experience for most of us but très Suisse. Later that evening we all enjoyed a delicious fondue dinner at Pierreàbot near La Chaux de Fonds. On Sunday, thanks to thoughtful planning by Jo and Bob, we met for an elegant lunch at the Beaulac, after which we watched the Fête des Vendages parade. I’m still coming across the odd piece of confetti.

The bond that formed during our year together is still very strong, but flexible enough to have embraced many significant others. The only regret is that more of us couldn’t have been there. The rapport among those of us who were lucky enough to attend seemed to return instantly, proving true the adage about making new friends but keeping the old. It certainly felt like a golden weekend, and I’m still bathing in the glow.
